Pub quiz nights in Zug: where to play

Zug is a small city. With around 30,000 people living in the canton capital, it doesn't have anything like the pub scene of Zurich or Geneva, and that's before you narrow things down to English-language quiz nights specifically. What it does have is an unusually international population for its size, thanks to the commodity trading and finance firms headquartered there, and that's enough to keep a couple of English-style pubs in business with a regular quiz on the calendar. We went looking for genuine, currently running nights rather than old listings, and found two worth mentioning.

A quick note before you head out: quiz nights are one of the more fragile fixtures in hospitality, and that's doubly true in a town this size, where a single change of staff can end a weekly tradition without anyone updating the website. We checked both of the following against the venue's own site, but treat that as a snapshot rather than a guarantee. It's worth a quick call before you commit an evening to either, especially if you're travelling into Zug specifically for it.

Mr. Pickwick Pub, near the station

Mr. Pickwick Pub sits on Alpenstrasse, a short walk from Zug's train station and not much further from the lake. It's part of a small chain of English-style pubs across Switzerland (there are sister pubs in Basel, Bern, Lucerne, Aarau and Baden), and the Zug location's own events page lists a "Pub Quiz" billed as a general knowledge night. The two instances we could confirm both fell on a Wednesday evening at 7:30pm, several months apart, which suggests it's a genuine recurring fixture rather than a one-off, even if the pub's site doesn't commit to "every Wednesday" in as many words. Given that, it's worth checking the pub's own events page for the current date before you go, rather than assuming a fixed weekly slot.

The pub itself leans into a British identity: English and Irish beer on tap, sport on the televisions, and a kitchen serving pub food alongside it. It's a sensible base for a quiz team given the location, right in the middle of town.

Flanagan's Irish Pub, Bundesplatz

Flanagan's, on Bundesplatz in the centre of town, is a proper Irish pub in the traditional sense: Guinness and Kilkenny on tap, sport on the screens, and a menu that mixes Irish and Swiss dishes. Its dedicated events page lists a Sunday Quiz starting at 8pm, with teams of up to five people competing for a cash prize. Unlike some pub websites that reuse the same boilerplate copy across every location, Flanagan's Basel and Zug pages each carry their own distinct events listings, which gave us more confidence that the Zug quiz is a maintained, real fixture rather than copy-pasted marketing text.

That's the extent of what we could verify. Zug's English-language quiz scene is genuinely small, just two pubs rather than the five or six you'd find in a bigger Swiss city, and we'd rather tell you that honestly than pad the list with bars that don't actually run anything. If you know of a venue running something we've missed, or if your own local doesn't have a quiz and you fancy suggesting one to whoever's behind the bar, it costs the pub nothing and it's an easy way to fill a quiet evening. Or skip the pub altogether and build your own set of questions with our free quiz creator, no reservation required. We've also written a full guide on how to run a great pub quiz if you want help with pacing, round structure and keeping a small, international crowd engaged for a couple of hours.
