Pub quiz nights in Vienna: where to play in English

Vienna is one of the easier cities in Europe to find a pub quiz in English. There's one running Monday through Thursday and another on Sunday, and most of them are free. The catch is that several venues run the same quiz in German on a different night of the week, so the night you pick matters more here than the pub does. Everything below was checked against the venue's or the quiz operator's own page. Quiz nights pause over summer and around public holidays, so it's worth a look at the listing before you go.

The Golden Harp

Neubau

When
Mondays, 7:30pm
Quick info
English night; free; teams of up to six; your phone is the buzzer; register in advance

An Irish pub on Schottenfeldgasse, just off Mariahilfer Straße and a short walk from U3 Zieglergasse. This is one of Luki's PubQuiz nights, a format built around 15 questions with a song playing under each one, using your phone to answer instead of paper. Important detail: the Golden Harp runs the same quiz in German on Thursdays at the same time, so make sure the date you register for is marked EN.

JO&JOE Vienna

Westbahnhof

When
Tuesdays, 7pm to 9pm
Quick info
English night; free; teams of up to six; register in advance

Same operator and same format as the Monday night, in the bar of a hostel at Europaplatz, right at Westbahnhof. Being inside a hostel, the room turns over a lot of people who've only just arrived in the city, and the transport links are about as good as they get in Vienna.

Beavers Pub

When
Wednesdays, 7pm to 9pm
Quick info
In English; free entry; €1 per person into a pot the winners take; teams of two to six, formed on the spot

An English pub and craft beer bar on Schönbrunner Straße in the fifth district. The money model is the clearest of any quiz here: entry is free, everyone puts in a euro, and the whole pot goes to the winning team. The pub says outright that teams form on the night, so you can walk in on your own and be on a team by the first question. The kitchen runs past the end of the quiz.

The Black Sheep

When
Thursdays, 7pm
Quick info
Teams of one to seven; jackpot and other prizes; also the fifth district

A small international pub on Kettenbrückengasse that bills itself as a house of comedy, music and art, and runs English and German comedy nights alongside the quiz. The quiz is hosted weekly and teams can be as small as one person, which is unusual and useful. The venue doesn't publish an entry fee, so bring cash in case.

Charlie P's

Alsergrund
Venue page
When
Sundays, 8pm
Quick info
Free entry; maximum team of six; rolling cash jackpot for a perfect 20

An Irish pub on Währinger Straße in the ninth district, near the university. The format is 20 questions with a jackpot that only pays out if a team gets every single one right, which means it rolls over and grows for weeks at a time. Teams are capped at six.

What we couldn't confirm

Crossfield's Australian Pub on Maysedergasse has a well-known Monday quiz, and it very probably still runs, but we're leaving it out. Its own quiz page returns a 404, and the start time appears as 7pm, 7:30pm and 8pm across its website, its Instagram and its printed menu. There were also posts suggesting it ran fortnightly rather than weekly over the summer. Any of those could be right. Ring the pub rather than trust a listing.

Pointers in the third district runs a quiz at 7pm in English and German with a six-person team cap, but doesn't say anywhere we could find which day of the week it's on.

For a fuller picture, pubquiz.wien keeps a daily-updated list of every quiz in the city, German nights included, which is more than we've tried to do here.

If none of these fit your week, build your own with our free quiz creator and run one wherever you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and more easily than in most German-speaking cities. There's an English-language quiz every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, plus a Sunday night at an Irish pub in the ninth district. Several venues run the same quiz in German on a different night, so check which night you're booking.
Entry is free at all five below. Beavers Pub asks for €1 a head, but that goes straight into a pot the winning team takes home rather than to the bar. Charlie P's runs a rolling cash jackpot that only pays out on a perfect round of 20.
No. Beavers Pub explicitly says teams form on the spot, and The Black Sheep accepts teams of anywhere from one to seven people. If you're new in the city and turning up alone, those two are the safest bets.
