How to connect ChatGPT to quizquiz.co
ChatGPT can put a finished quiz on your quizquiz.co account while you're still chatting to it. Ask for twenty questions about 90s music and, instead of a block of text you then have to copy somewhere, you get a playable quiz and a link to share.
There's a wrinkle in the timing, though, and it's worth understanding before you set anything up. OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs and replacing them with plugins, with 11 December 2026 as the headline date in its release notes. That changes which route you want depending on when you're reading this.
Here's the short version:
- Right now, any plan: the quizquiz.co GPT works and takes one click
- Business, Enterprise or Edu on the web: you can connect quizquiz.co directly as an MCP server, which is the more capable route and isn't going anywhere
- After the retirement date: plugins are the way in, and quizquiz.co is being packaged as one
What you'll need
- A ChatGPT account
- A quizquiz.co account (the free one is fine)
- A minute, two if you count signing in
The quick route today: the quizquiz.co GPT
Open the quizquiz.co GPT. That's the whole setup. No config file, no URL to paste, no settings page to find.
The first time you ask for a quiz it needs to connect to your quizquiz.co account:
- Ask for something specific, like "Create a quiz about European capitals with 10 questions"
- ChatGPT asks permission to talk to quizquiz.co. Allow it
- A sign-in window opens on quizquiz.co. Sign in with Google, or with your email address and password
- You land back in the chat and the quiz gets built
Two links come back: one to preview the quiz, one to open it in the editor. The connection sticks, so everything after that goes straight through.
Use it, by all means, but don't build a routine around it. When custom GPTs are retired this one goes with them, and the piece that does the actual work (the action that talks to quizquiz.co) is specifically one of the things OpenAI says doesn't carry across in the migration to plugins. Instructions migrate. Actions don't.
Using it
Ask in whatever words come naturally. These all work:
- "Make a 10-question pub quiz about 90s movies"
- "Create a science quiz for kids, multiple choice"
- "I need 20 questions across two rounds for a Christmas work quiz"
You can keep editing in the chat, too. "Swap question 4 for something easier" or "add a music round" is usually faster than opening the editor, though the editor is there when you want to drag things around or add pictures.
What plugins mean for this
The vocabulary moved around in 2026 and it's genuinely confusing, so briefly:
- A plugin is the thing you turn on in ChatGPT. It's the packaging and the discovery unit
- An app is a connection to an outside service
- MCP is the open standard underneath, the same one Claude uses for connectors
- Skills are saved instructions, which is the part of a custom GPT that does survive migration
A plugin can bundle skills, an MCP server, or both. The old app directory was folded into a plugin directory in July 2026, so the directory you'll browse is the plugin one.
For you as a reader this is mostly invisible: you'll find quizquiz.co in the directory and switch it on. We'll update this post with the steps once it's listed.
Business, Enterprise and Edu: connect it directly now
If you're on one of those plans, you don't have to wait. You can point ChatGPT at the quizquiz.co MCP server yourself, on the web:
- Go to Plugins and click the + button
- Choose Add custom MCP server
- Give it a name (
quizquizis fine, it's just the label you'll see) - Under Connection, paste this as the server URL:
https://quizquiz-mcp.quizquiz.workers.dev/mcp
- For authentication, pick OAuth
- Read the risk warning, then select I understand and want to continue
- Click Create as a plugin, then install it before you can use it in a chat
Developer Mode isn't required for this, despite what some older guides say. On a managed workspace an admin may need to allow it first.
That warning screen is worth actually reading rather than clicking past. A custom MCP server can act on your behalf inside ChatGPT, so "only connect servers you trust" is real advice rather than boilerplate.
One advantage of this route: it gets both of the tools quizquiz.co publishes, so as well as creating quizzes, ChatGPT can list the ones you already have. "What quizzes do I have?" works here and doesn't through the GPT.
Writing prompts that get you better questions
The gap between a usable quiz and a bland one is almost entirely in how much you say up front.
Say who it's for. "Make it hard enough for a regular pub team" and "keep it easy, there'll be kids playing" produce genuinely different quizzes. Left to itself ChatGPT pitches everything at the middle.
Ask for the format you want. Say "multiple choice, four options each" or "open answer only". Unprompted it mixes them, which is fine for a casual round and annoying if you're printing answer sheets.
Narrow the topic. "Focus on British sitcoms from the 90s" beats "make it about TV". Broad topics are where you get the questions everybody has heard before.
Give it the structure. "20 questions across two rounds, one music one geography" gets you a quiz you can run. "20 questions" gets you a list.
One thing worth building into your routine: spot-check the answers before quiz night. ChatGPT states things it has wrong with the same confidence as things it has right, and a wrong answer in front of a room is a bad time. Asking it to flag anything it isn't sure about helps, but it's no substitute for checking the handful that look surprising. More on that in using AI to generate pub quiz questions.
Troubleshooting
ChatGPT writes out questions instead of creating a quiz. You're probably in a normal chat rather than the quizquiz.co GPT. Open it from the link above and ask again.
The sign-in window never appears. Check your browser isn't blocking popups from chatgpt.com, then ask for a quiz again.
The quiz isn't in your account. Nearly always a second account: you authorised one quizquiz.co login and you're browsing as another. Easy to do if you've got a work and a personal Google account.
It worked last week and now it wants you to sign in again. The connection can expire. Sign in again when prompted and it picks up where it left off.
You can't find Add custom MCP server. That option is limited to Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts on the web.
ChatGPT or Claude?
If you use both, Claude is the less fiddly setup today. Its connector works on every plan including the free one, it isn't mid-migration, and it gets the full set of quizquiz.co tools. There's a separate guide for connecting Claude.
On the questions themselves, the honest answer is that prompting matters more than which assistant you pick. Both give you something generic if you ask for "a general knowledge quiz" and something good if you tell them who's playing.
What's next
Once the quiz exists you can run it as a live presentation, add picture or music rounds in the editor, or share the link and let people play from their phones.
